Protecting and Rebuilding Teeth with Dental Crowns

Our dental crowns improve both the function and the appearance of a damaged tooth. A crown can save a tooth that is too broken down to take another filling.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are porcelain restorations that cover the entire tooth. They are an ideal solution for:

  • Repairing broken or heavily filled teeth.
  • Strengthening teeth following root canal treatment.
  • Protecting teeth from further damage or fractures.

Crafted from durable, natural-looking materials, crowns not only restore the tooth’s function but also blend seamlessly with your smile.

The Benefits of Crowns

A crown restores a damaged tooth in four ways:

  • Enhanced Function

Strengthen teeth for better chewing and speaking.

  • Protection

Covering the whole tooth holds a cracked or heavily filled tooth together, so it is far less likely to split.

  • Keeping Your Own Tooth

A crown is often what saves a tooth that would otherwise have to come out.

  • A Natural Look

Porcelain is shaded to match the teeth either side, so a crowned tooth does not stand out.

How a Crown Is Fitted

  1. Examination and X-rays

We check the tooth and the root beneath it to be sure a crown is the right repair, and that what is left of the tooth is sound enough to hold one.

  2. Preparing the Tooth

The damaged tooth is shaped to accommodate the restoration. If a lot of it has been lost, it is built up first so the crown has a firm core to sit on.

  3. Impressions and a Temporary Crown

We take impressions and digital scans for the laboratory, and fit a temporary crown to protect the tooth while your permanent one is made.

  4. Fitting Your Crown

At your second visit the temporary comes off and the finished crown is cemented in place. We check your bite and adjust it until it feels like your own tooth.

Why Choose Barrington Dental Care for Crowns?

  • Saving the Tooth Comes First

A crown is a way of keeping your own tooth. We will only recommend one where the tooth is worth saving, and tell you plainly when it is not.

  • Crowns After Root Canal Treatment

We carry out root canal treatment here too, so the tooth can be treated and crowned by the same team.

  • A Fee Agreed Before We Start

You know what your crown will cost before the tooth is prepared.

  • Gentle, Unhurried Care

The tooth is numbed before it is prepared, and if dental treatment makes you anxious our nervous patients page explains how we work.

Crowns or veneers?

The two are often confused. There is a side-by-side comparison on our dental veneers page.

Dental Crowns Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a crown last?

Looked after well, most crowns last 10–15 years or more. How long yours lasts depends on the tooth underneath, your bite, and whether you grind your teeth — the edge where the crown meets the tooth needs cleaning as carefully as any other tooth.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?

Often, particularly on a back tooth. A root-filled tooth is more brittle than a living one, and a crown protects it from fracturing under the force of chewing. Our root canal treatment page explains the treatment itself.

How many visits does a crown take?

Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, when a temporary crown is fitted, and a second to fit the finished crown.

Does having a crown fitted hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic before it is prepared, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. It can feel a little sensitive for a few days afterwards.
